SPORTS AND PASTIMES

The programme of boxing and wrestling events arranged at Hawera on Friday under tho ausplcos of the association, which work had been shut down during the war, was most successful and opened with a fillip that apTears to herald a great Increaso in Interest by the people of the whole district. Durhig the evening there were a number of bouts, of three rounds each, which were watched with intense Interest and created a lot of enthusiasm. The contestants were as follows: L. Wills and R. Henman, F. New and A. Hurrell, M. Balloy and D. Poynton, H Mills and L. Wills, A. Hurrell nnd Scotty HIM. The form shown by tho boxers was very good indeed. A wrestling bout, catch-as-catch-can by Woods (Normanby) nnd Drake (Okaiawa) was -a very fine exhibition of scientific wrestling nnd created great enthusiasm. Mr. C. dimming was referee. At the conclusion, Mr. J. 0. Osborne, the president, ii anked Dr. Thomson for his kindness In coming to examine the contestant!!, and all those who took part for the display they fad given. He hoped the association would encourage to the utmost all sports, and felt Hure there was a good work to be done In the town and district. The proof that It was i.ppreclated was shown by the number present. He announced that they hnd appointed Jlessrs. A. Hurrell and L. Wills hon. Instructors, and that classes would be formed, and added that probably a tournament would bt< held early In October.
