SPORTS AND PASTIMES
The programme of boxing and wrestling events arranged at Hawera on Friday under tho ausplcos of the association, which work had been shut down during the war, was most successful and opened with a fillip that apTears to herald a great Increaso in Interest by the people of the whole district. The seat!>!g accommodation was taxed to the utmost, fully three hundred being present. Including visitors from all parts of South Taranakl, says >.m> Star.
The Mayor (Mr. E. Dixon) opened the prooedings In a short speech, welcoming all pres-e-"i and expressing the hopo that the evening would be suocessful. The Iter. C. H. Grant Cowen stressed the value of the association and hoped that Iho committee would encourage sporls of every kind. He said ho would very much like to see cricket started against. Manly sports Inculcated Belf-rellant habits and self-confidence, f.tid should be encouraged In every way possible.
Durhig the evening there were a number of bouts, of three rounds each, which were watched with intense Interest and created a lot of enthusiasm. The contestants were as follows: L. Wills and R. Henman, F. New and A. Hurrell, M. Balloy and D. Poynton, H Mills and L. Wills, A. Hurrell nnd Scotty HIM. The form shown by tho boxers was very good indeed. A wrestling bout, catch-as-catch-can by Woods (Normanby) nnd Drake (Okaiawa) was -a very fine exhibition of scientific wrestling nnd created great enthusiasm. Mr. C. dimming was referee. At the conclusion, Mr. J. 0. Osborne, the president, ii anked Dr. Thomson for his kindness In coming to examine the contestant!!, and all those who took part for the display they fad given. He hoped the association would encourage to the utmost all sports, and felt Hure there was a good work to be done In the town and district. The proof that It was i.ppreclated was shown by the number present. He announced that they hnd appointed Jlessrs. A. Hurrell and L. Wills hon. Instructors, and that classes would be formed, and added that probably a tournament would bt< held early In October.
