FLOODS IN OTAGO.
RAILWAYS HELD UP. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Aug. 19. In consequence of the heavy rain and parts, of the line between Allanton and jWalhola being under water, the south train to Invercargill was not despatched J this morning. The train from Invercargill only goes to Clinton. The outram line is closed, but the Otago Central line is clear There is a tremendous body of water neav Allanton and Henley. The weather is now fine and reports from up country are good. The latest reports from the Taieri state that the water is still hanking up at Otakia and Henley, but the hanks are holding. Owing to slips, the Otago Central trains did not run.
BANK OF TAIERI BREAKS. Dunedin, Last Night. A marked improvement took place in the weather all over Otago to-day, and while a very serious flood has been experienced on the Taieri Plain there seems little cause for apprehension of further extensive damage. In the after, noon a breach occurred in the bank of the Taieri River, near Otokia, and water flowed on to the plain, but there is a prospect of the river falling. This will probably enable the breach to be repaired. Road and rail traffic, southwards of Dunedin and on Otago central line was auspended to-day, and it is doubtful if the train to Invercargill will run tomorrow, as there is seven feet of water on the lino at one place. To-night there have been a, number of slips on the Central Otago lino, and this train will not be despatched to-morrow.
