THE SALVATION OF EUROPE.
■» LIES IN HARD WORK. By Telegraph.—Press As?n— Copyright. London, Aug. 13. Mr. Hoover, in an article in the National Food Journal, states that 15 million families in Europe are receiving unemployment allowances in one form or another. The population of Europe is 100,000,000 greater than can be supported without imports. The proper and insistent demand of Labor for higher standards of living is unfortunately impregnated with the theory that the limitation of effort will increase total employment. Unless productivity is rapidly increased moral and economic chaos will result, finally interpreting itself in loss of life on a scale hitherto undreamed of. T.ie--entire surplus productivity of America is totally incapable of meeting the European deficiency. There is no economic policy in bringing food to a stomach which does not 9eeure maximum production. The practice of raising "funds by the inflation of the currency mnst cease. Mir. Hoover suggests the abolition of th{; great bureaucracies eontrolling prices and distribution, which are unnecessary now that the world markets are open. All attempts at the .international control of prices with the" view of benefiting Europe will produce a retrogression of production abroad. A decreacs of 20 per per cent, in American wheat would not starve America but would starve Europe. Unless there is more work, in Europe, and also sane statesmanship, America cannot po on feeding Europe on Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc.
