UNITED STATES NATIONAL DOUBLES, j SUCCESS OF AUSTRALIANS. j By Telegraph.—Press Assn —Coppr'ght. | Received August 14, 5.5 p.m. j New York, August 12. The Times' Boston correspondent reports that the second round of the Rational doubles were played on August 12, in which Patterson and Brookes defeated W|lllems and Washbum, and Alexander and Voshell defeated Lycet( arid- Thomas. The doubles brought* out the fact that Patterson, who is one of the most brilliant players seen on American courts, needs the steadiness of Brookes to make his game effective. Brookes remained cool and calculating, often making phenomenal recoveries, Both men played fast and brilliant tennis, and met with strong thouch ineffective opposition. Their opponents, Lyceit and Thomas, gave them the hardest play of their lives. The Australians were completely outplayed by Alexander and Voshell in two of five sets. The Americans found Thomas' service excessively hard to handle.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. (
