(Prom Our Own Correspondent.) (All communications, letters, etc., left with Mr. H. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive promt attention.) ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. August 12. At the Magistrate's (Court on Tuesday, before Messrs C. D. vSoln and J. McCluggage, J's.P., Peter Keenan was charged with having attempted to commit suicide at Douglas ,<lll July 30, by cutting his throat with a razor. The accused, who pleaded guilty, was convicted and entered to come up for sentence when called upon. He was alos ordered to pay police expenses, amounting to £l7 10s, and hospital expenses. Sergeant Dale said the defendant had signed the pledge and he did not think there would be any further trouble with him.

SOCIAL AT TOKO. A social in honor of three returned men—Lieut. Goldup, Corporal Pincham, and Rifleman Stanford—was held in the Toko Coronation Hall on Tuesday evening. Mr. W. H. Were, who presided, 6aid,it was gratifying- to see such a large attendance. As one of the oldest residents of Toko he was very pleased to welcome the men back. They had done their duty nobly and well, and more than that could not be said. He referred to the splendid record of Lieut. Golduip, who went awav as a private and by his pwn grit won his commission. As Lieut. (V.ldtip had not received the usual gift jj of a wristlet watch upon his departure, he >'ad much plensure in presenting him with one as a memento from the Toko pe-P.1.. Major Hine also congratulated Lieut, ftnldup upon winning his commission on the field. Js T ow that the war was over they could well emerge from the restraints of past years and derive some enjoyment from such functions as they were holding that evening It was well tn remember that might was not always right, and that right would eventually triumph, in every sphere. Lieut. Goldup, who replied for himself »nd his comrades, said that they felt deeply grateful for the honor bestowed upon them. With other New Zcalauders the Toko soldiers had done well. He thanked them for the wateh, which, he said, he would always value. During the evening Mr. P. Aitken contributed a couple of songs, and the dance music was provided by Mrs. Rianchi (piano). Mr. F. Parker (cornet), and Mr. B. Vinson (drams). Extras were played bv the Misses Scott, and !he duties of M.C. were carried out by Messrs M. Oernhoefer and J. T. Kilpatrick. A first-class supper was provided. Major TTino gave a most interesting address 111' the Parish Hall on Tuesday evening ou hi-, experiences in Palestine. At the conclusion he was accorded a vote of thanks, on the motion of the Rev. C. W. Howard. GENERAL A woman wrote to the Stratford Hospital Board: "I am forwarding £lO in this lot, as I happened to have two £5 notes. I expect it will he a good while before I can send you any more. How are things in Stratford? It is very herd here, as everything is so dear. I Imve to make niv own dresses; £ll for a costume is no good to me. This is all at present. King regards." A reminder is given of the sale to-day by Mr. T. J. T.nmason of the furniture and effects of Mr. H. Masters, at Brecon I'ioad. Poultry fanciers should note that nmong the effects are a number of purebred black Orpington fowls that are well worth securing.
