COAL CRISIS IN WANGANUI.
ACTION BY BOROUGH COUNCIL. By Telegraph.—l'ress Association. Wangiimi, Last Night. Owing to the deadlock in connection with unloading the coal cargo from the steamer lnga, which has been lying at the wharf for tha last month; a desperate position iuis now been reached. The coal stocks nt the municipal gaa-w.i-ks will be exhausted on Friday, and, if I lie works close down, the tram service and many local industries Will be seriously affected in the course of the few following days. To-dav the Borough Council telegraphed urgently to the Minister of Munitions, and got a reply stating that coal could not he allocated to Wanganui while a vessel with COO tons on board was lying idle nt the port. At a meeting of the council to-night it was decided that the Mayor should wait on the Watersidcrs' Union in the morning and urge them to unload, otherwise the borough gasworks manager will he instructed to discharge the vessel. The motion was keenly debated. Several councillors feared this action would precipitate a general strike in the Dominion, and contended that the National Government should flccopt the responsibility, and not a local body
