MR. WILKINSON. M.P.
RETIRES PROM EDUCATION BOARD. The resignation of Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, M.P., was received by the Taranaki Education Board yesterday. In explaining the reason for his action Mr. Wilkinson stated he felt that the pressure of other claims and his inability to givo the necessary amount of time to the work of the board required that lie should vacate the position for someone who could givfe' more time than he was at present able to devote to the board's business. He thanked the board members for the consideration shown him during the past seven or eight months, when he had been travelling about the Dominion on public business, and expressed regret at retiring from active work in a cause' in which he was deeply interested. He pointod out that when he first came on the board ha told those who urged him to accept nomination that he might be able to serve only for a short time. His object was to assist in the consolidation' of tlie work' of the newly-established Taranaki district, and he was pleased to know that though there bad been some prejudice in the area taken over from the Wanganui Board, which had been very popular, the work of the Taranaki Board was now recognised as being fully efficient. Mr. Wilkinson also referred to the fortunate position the board was in in having as'-ehairnmn a man who could give so much of his time to the work, and stressed the need for adequate recognition of such services. Other members of the board also gave a great deal of time to thje work, and Mr. Wilkinson said they were not treated as well even as members of county councils, though their work embraced the whole provincial district. If that policy was continued it would mean that the' day would come when the country would not get men to givo their cervices in such work. Mr. Masters moved, and it was unanimously resolved that Mr. Wilkinson's resignation be accepted with regret, and that the board place on record its appreciation of hia valuable services during the time ho had been on the board. The chairman, spoke in eulogistic terms of Mr. Wilkinson's worts on the board, and was supported by every other member. Oil. WjJkiMoa suitably re9goiide4»
