POLICE RAID BILLIARD SALOON. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Invercargill, Aug, 13. • As the result of a rafd by the police, William Atkinson was charged with using his billiard saloon as a common gaming house, and William Ratcliffe was charged with aiding him. Accused was remanded till Friday, with bail in £l4O.

The Provincial Executive of the Auckland Farmers' Union resolved- unanimously to urge the Government to appoint experts to inquire into the whole position of the meat trade and to endeavor to arrange with the Imperial Government to release Dominion produce at a price that will put it in the hands of retail butchers without profit or loss; further, to report to the New Zealand Government what steps should be taken With regard to the markets for New Zealand produce after the cessation of the commandeer. "VANGANUI SPRING SHOW. Wanganui, Lasf Xi«ht The Wanganui Agricultural Associstion to-day . decided to revert to the system of holding a spring show. A proposal to wind up the association was defeated. .The president, Mr. W. J. Polson, tendered his resignation, on the ground of inability to devote the necessary time to the spring show.
EXIT CONSCRIPTION. Wellington, August 13. A proclamation is being issued thin week proclaiming the abolition of the Expeditionary Force Reserve. A general order is also being issued discharging from the force, as from August 7, all men in camp or who were under orders to proceed to camp on the signing of tlie armistice. The combineed effect of the proclamation and order is that conscription in New Zealand has now, both in letter and fact, ceased to exist.
SHORTHORN BREEDERS' ASSN. Wellington, Last Night. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Shorthorn Cattle Breeders' Association was held to-day, Mr. R. E. Alexander presiding. The annual report stated that the members totalled 160. MrAlexander was re-elected president, and Mr. John Deans (South Island) and Mr. 5. Gascoyne (North Island) were reelected members of the council. It was decided that after -July 1, 1919, bleeders must tatoo or fire-brand all animals used for breeding purposes, and that the tattoo or fire-brand be included in the pedigree and breeding returns. Shields, for competition in 1919 were allocated as follows:—North Island':' Masterton, Fcildingv Hawke's Bay, Auckland, and Hawera. South Island : Christchurch, Dunedin, Invercargill, Ashburton, and Gore.' It was decided there he a recommendation to the Government that breeding cattle submitted to public sale be tested as to soundness. A BOOKMAKER FINED. Wellington, Last Night. EVADING PAYMENT OP FARE. , Taumarunui, August 12. A man, who pleaded guilty to a charge, of evading payment for a railway ticket between Taumaninui and OhaV kune, was to-day, fined £2 and cost's The accused slept from here to Ohakune, where he purchased a ticket to Marton. When challenged by the guard, the accused first denied his offence and then paid the fare and gave a wrong nsme.
