ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY.

The first, lecture under the auspices of the New Plymouth Astronomical Society will he given on Thursday even ing in the assembly hall at the Boys High School. The president of thesociety (Mr. S. Percy-Smith) will taki the chair at 7.30 p.m. The subject to be dealt with is entitled "An Astronomical Introduction." This will be profusely illustrated by means of slides, many of which have been secured by means of the huge telescopes employed at the Greenwich, Capetown, Paris, and Lick observatories. The lecturer (Rev. Oscar Illundell) will deal with the subject in a, popular manner, taking into consideration the requirements of uninitiated persons. Tickets for the lecture mav be obtained through Mr. W. H. Mo'ycs. The proceeds will go to t he society's funds.
