MINING CONFERENCE.
> ?ROSPEOTS BRIGHTER. ■ (From Our Own Correspondent.) Wellington, Aug. 0. The prospects of a settlement of the coal dispute are now regarded as bright. The discussions of the last few days have shown that both the mine-owners and tho miners are anxious to avoid conflict. The publicity that has been given to the proceedings of the conference has served a very useful purpose by providing ft basis pn which the public's'verdict could ba based in the event of any accentuation of the existing coal difficulties, and tho parties agree in wishing to avoid a stoppage at the mines. The miners, who' have made the first concession by withdrawing the five demands, will want something in return, but the owners probably will feci that they can afford to yield on certain other points, How far the adjustment of the" present dispute will go towards solving the coal problem generally is another matter. Nothing that has occurred at the conference goes to show that the coal supply will be improved by the concessions the milters are Asking.
