BOLSHEVIK HORRORS. FIENDISH INGENUITY IN TORTURE. By Telesrrapli—Press Assn.—Copyrifilit. London, Aug. o. Router's special correspondent at RostuH'-on-Doii, cabling on July 31, states that the horrors perpetuated at Kharkoff by the Chresvychaika or Bolshevik Extraordinary Commission cannot be refuted. After the occupation of the city by Denikin's troops hundreds of victims of Bolshevik cruelty wero disinterred in the presence of the medical authorities, representatives of the trades unions, and responsible foreigners. Photographs were taken of some of the devices, of fiendish ingenuity, for torturing victims. One called "glove-making" was utilised to strip the skin from the hands of living victims. Several pairs of those "gloves" were found and photographed. Every conceivable form of mutilation was nerpetuated In the Chresvychaika slaughter-house, Hands, feel, ivml breasts were cut off, jaws smashed, eves gouged out, ami victims disembowelled or tortured by having boiling water poured over them. Many were thrown alive into wells or mineshafts, others heaped in huge holes in the ground, and in underground galleries several layers of corpses were discovered. The commissaries nightly made merry, while Bolshevik, Chinese, and other ghouls were revelling in a more ghastly manner. Arrests were made on farcical .charges; some were arrested and shot for possessing verses satirisinc; the Bolsheviks.
Among the favorite questions of the inquisitors was: "Have you ever abused Trotsky?" as the repression of tlie Jews and atrocities redoubled c.ftnr tl'e visits of Trotsky to Kharkoff. RE-EMBARKATION OF ALLIES. Received August 7, 9.30 p.m. London, August S. A Bolshevik wireless states that, after sixteen hours' fierce fighting in the streets of Onega, the Allied troops reembarked under a hurricane of fire from the sliipp, which moved northwards. General Maynard's communique states: We were successful on land and sea. We made an air raid on Lake Onega, capturing Port Talvinski. Two enemy armed steamers were captured, and a third wai driven ashore. DOMINION NEWS. BUTTER AND BACON HOARDING. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Napier, August 7. The watersiders allege that certain firms in Napier ore hoarding butter and bacon. It was decided to work no cargo of this nature for those firms until the hoarded stocks are reiensed. The union also decided that no butter will be loaded from this port until a certain amount is available for the local market. CAPTAIN DIES AT SEA. Dunedin, August 7. The Union Company's barque Dartford arrived at Callao on August 1 from Newcastle, after a passage of tiu days. Cable advice received by tho company's head office states that the master, Captain Donald McKensiie, died at sea on July IS. Captain MrKonzie was born at Auckland and had' a large experience of the coastal trade, serving as chief officer and master of the schooner HumHe was appointed in lUI7 master of the Dartford when the vessa wi« refitted for sea service and made several successful voyages between Now Zealand, Australian, find American ports. He was about -10 years of age. CHRISTCHTTRCIT EXTENSION OF ELECTRICITY. Christehureh, Last Night. Ratepayers to-day gave the City Council authority to raise a loan of £150.000 in eonneetion with the further distribution and supply of electricity.
