NOTE ISSUE AND GOLD RESERVE. Melbourne, August 0. The note issue is now £55,406,896, and the gold reserve £24,308,413. POLITICAL. Brisbane, August 6. At the opening of Parliament the Governor, outlining the Government's policy, said a Bill would be submitted dealing thoroughly and equitably with the whole ■ matter of the present remorseless profiteering. Other measures would include an investigation of unemployment and the establishment of an unemployment insurance fund. It is also intended to reintroduce the Bill for the abolition of the Legislative Council and to amend the Electoral Act, extending the franchise to all persons attaining the age of eighteen. The Government also "nded to make representations to the Imperial authorities with the object of abolishing the office of-State Governor at the expiration of the present appointment in March next.—Aus.-N.Z.
