MILITARY ABSENTEES.
MEANING OF A RECENT CABLEGRAM. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Wellington, Last Night. A cablegram from London, referring to the departure of the remaining New Zealand troops from the United Kingdom, mentions that "three hundred absentees are scattered throughout th* United Kingdom. These men have been notified that they must report to New Zealand Headquarters if they wish to secure repatriation." Some of the men referred to have been absent from their units for many months and they may not intend to return to New Zealand. Technically, they are deserters, but their offence is mitigated in many cases by the fact that they did their duty while the war continued. They found civilian attractions too much for them after the armistice had been signed.
