THE ARAPAWA ASHORE.
AT ENTRANCE TO WAITARA RIVER. ' (Prom Our Own Correspondent.) The s.s. Arapawa when leaving Waitara with a cargo on Sunday had the misfortune to run ashore on the bar, There is plenty of water on the bar at present, but the Arapawa is a very difficult boat to steer, and, although the helm was hard over, she ran on to the side of the channel and stuck there. During the afternoon and night an effort was made to get her off, and although they succeeded in this sufficient way could not be got on her to enable her to steer, and alio drifted on the beach close to the north wall. 1 She is in a rather bad position, and an endeavour is to be made to-night to get her further from the wall, as if a sea got up she would very probably get smashed up on the wall. Her propeller is apparently injured, but otherwise she is not much damaged. The Arapawa is of 271 tons gross register and is commanded by Captain Koatley. She was proceeding to Onehunga when the mishap occurred. On Saturday morning she was unable to work cargo at Opunake, whither she was bound from Wanganui, and went to Waitara after calling at New Plymouth.
