SOLDIERS AND STRIKE-BREAKING. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, August L Mr. J, H. Thomas, in the House of Commons, referring to the Triple Alliance ballot, said the workers were not 111 tavor of Bolshevism, but complained" (it the Allies interfering or dictating the form of Government. The Crown was entitled to use soldiers iji order to preserve law and order, but not entitled to use soldiers for the purpose of breaking strikes. Mr. Churchill replied that it was odious for the State to use force in disputes between capital and labor, but where the State as a whole was challenged and the life and welfare of the community at stake it obviously must use all its resources and fight without flinching to the bitter end.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn, TOWARDS A SETTLEMENT. London, August 1. Sir Robert Home, Minister for Labor, discussed the situation with a deputation of Yorkshire miners, and made satisfactory progress towards a settlement. The Miners' Association agreed to confer with the owners. No steps are being taken to end the Yorkshire strike, the authorities believing that, when the men are tired of holidays they will resume work. The miners are already feeling the loss of wages acutely, and the pawnbroker is busy. The Yorkshire Miners' Association is selling its investments to provide strike pay. VIEWS OP THE BRANCHES ASKED. Received August 4, 2.55 p.m. Genoa, August 2. There was fierce rioting in connection with the strike in Basle. Troops fired on the crowd, nine being killed and many wounded.—United Service.
