Cable Assn. Received August 5, 1.25 a.m. London, August 3. 'Conflicts occurred at Liverpool, the troops firing a volley overhead. A man was shot in the stomach. Two thousand reinforcements arrived. A meeting of unionists resolved upon a general strike in sympathy with the police. Liverpool is now strongly gifirded with machine-guns and tanks.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn. VACANCIES QUICKLY FILLED. METROPOLITAN MEN THANKED. ——— Received August 4, 7.40 pm. London, August 2. The vacancies in the police ranks in London were rapidly filled, and 400 pensioners applied for permission to resume. General Macready thanked the Metropolitan Police for their splendid loyalty, and said he was convinced that now the force had been purged of discontent it would increase its great reputation.
