At the Magistrate's Court, before Messrs Sole and McCluggage, J's P., Frederick. Thomas Ellis was charged With having obtained the use of a taxi, incurring a liability of £l2 18s, by fraudulently representing that he was in the employ of Dalgety and Co. Constable Townsend prosecuted, and accused ivas represented by Mr. Fitzherbert. Cecil Arthur Coles, taxi proprietor, Eltham, said that on June 4 accused, representing that he was acttag for Dalgety's, hired a car to go to Stratford. Witness diWe accused to Stratford, and a car to go to Stratford was also, hired on the fith and 7th, on the Btli to go to New Plymouth, and on the fi-fh to go to Opunake. Accused asked witness for the account on the Bth, and said that his money had not come through from Dalgety's, Wanganui. That was the last witness saw of him.

Plymouth, said he arrested accused at New Plymouth on another charge. About June 21 he interviewed accused about the present ease, and he intimated that he intended to plead guilty, and made the following statement, which he signed: "I, Fred Thomas Ellia, intend to plear' guilty to the charge of. obtaining credi. to the amount of £l2 18s from Cecil, Arthur Coles by means of fraud." In the course of conversation accused admitted that he was not travelling for Dalgety. Accused, who reserved his defence and pleaded not guilty, was committed for trial at the next sittings of the Supreme Court at New Plymouth He was further charged with having obtained boots and other goods from Hannah and Co. on .Tune 7, and goods to the value of £1 Ift? 2d, and on June 9 goods to the value of £4 12s 2d. After hearing considerable evidence as to purchase of the goods, the Bench said the evidence did not justify committal, and. both informations would be dismissed. POLITICAL At a meeting of the members of the Stratford Liberal and Labor Party, over ivhich Mr. J. McCluggage presidod, it was decided to send the following message to Sir Joseph Ward on his arrival in New Zealand: "This meeting of representatives of the old Liberal and Labor Party of Stratford district heartily welcome yourself and Lady Ward hack to New Zealand, and congratulate von on the splendid services you have rendered civilisation and the British Empire at the recent Peace Conference. Wo sincerely hope and trust that you will be long spared with good health and strength to lead a sound progressive and democratic party at the coming general election. Your great proved linancial talents and political foresight and courage were never more needed to save this great productive country from industrial disaster than at the present time. GENERAL. At a welcome home social at Te Popo on Friday evening Private Alex. Fraser was presented with an illuminated address. The winners of the prizes in the euchre tournament held during the evening were Miss Sole and Mr. Francis. A. tennis dance was held in the Coronation Hall, T0k0,..0n Thursday evening. The attendance was good, and'the evening was spent pleasantly. Dance mil sic was supplied bv Mrs. Bianehi and Mr, Parker, and the duties of M.C. were discharged by Mr. M. Gernhoefor.
