ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY.
MEETING OP EXECUTIVE. The executive of the New Plymouth Astronomical Society met on Wednesday evening at the residence of Mr S. Percy Smith, who, as presid?nt, occa., pied the chair. There was a hill attendance with the exception of tar W. W. Smith, who sent an apology for absence. The trsaw.rer (Mr A. H. Johnstone) reported that 55 members were now <-n----rolled, and subscription* were coming in well. The treasurer, and the secretary (Rev. O. Blundull) wcrs authorised to sign and endorse cheques on the society's funds. A sub-committee appointed to discover the most suitable site for an observatory, reported that careful investigation had shown the Bouth end of Marsland Hill to be the best adapted for the purpose, and it was decide,, to approach the Borough Council with a view to obtaining leave to erect an observatory in that portion. After hearing replies to inquiries made concerning the cost of a suitable telescope anij. observatory siu'h as will do credit to the town and be of real service in research work and in promoting knowledge among young and old, it was decided to aim at a sum of £6OO to be raised by public subscription. Steps' to secure donations from public-spirited persons are to be taken forthwith. It was reported that the tickets for the forthcoming lecture on August 14 at the Boys' High School were going off well. This lecture, which is entitled "An Astronomical Introduction," will be of a popular cast and is to be delivered by Rev. Oscar Blundell. The proceads will augment the society's [funds. The financial year of the socie# is fixed as from July 1 to June 30.
