The water and works committee reported that the matter of rp-metalling the main streets had received the attention of the committee, but they were not inclined, considering the financial position of the borough, to spend all the available money on one or two streets, but to go on patching wherever necessary. At the June meeting of the council the committee had been given authority to spend £ I'd in the improvement of the approach to the Camp Reserve, but, in view of the position to-day, they had held the matter over with a further recommendation to the council that they pay the Domain Board £3O due for iron, etc, removed from the reserve, and that the Domain Board meet and approve of tho expenditure of this sum in the suggested improvements, which amounts will be augmented by , £2;'; from the football club. This would give over £7O for the work, and another scheme of interest ivould follow if the Council carried out the suggestion. In regard to sanitation, the committee recommended an overhauling of the bylaws to make them more comprehensive and fair, and to make a weekly service compulsory. Charges in connection with water power required remodelling, and in all cases a meter should be installed. Some of the users in the country were enjoying the full use of the water at less cost thanHhose in the town, who shoulder the financial responsibility, and this should not be. It was decided that the nightsoil employee report upon any extreme conditions existing in the borough, and that three months' notice he given to users of the water for power purposes of the council's intention to determine the existing agreement, as the council inten'ded' to revise the charges, and that the mini, mum charge for the .borough be £5..:,
