FIRES.
OUTBREAK IN CINEMA THEATRE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christehurch, Last Night. At two o'clock this afternoon a. fire occurred in the box at tho Liberty Theatre, Cathedral Square, but was prevented from spreading beyond the box. An operator and a boy were in the box at the time of the fire. The brigade promptly coped with the outbreak. The two cinema machines in the box were damaged, but it is not thought they are beyond repair. Many films were destroyed or affected by water. No panic at all was displayed by the fair-sized audience present. Two soldiers tore down a burning curtain over a window adjacent, to the operating box, which caught fire when the door of the box Was opened, while the audience walked quietly out of the building, which i* insured for 4114,000 in the Commercial Union. martinb'orough SCHOOL DESTROYED. Wellington, Last Night. The secretary of the Wellington Education Board was advised to-day that the Martinborough School was completely destroyed by lire the previous night. The cause of the fire, so far, is unknown to the board authorities. The school consisted of four large classrooms capable of accommodating 250 to 300 children. The building was of wood, and half of it was comparatively new. The school gymnasium, a detached building, was considerably damaged, but can speedily be repaired for use as a classroom.
