Mr. A. K. Smart, has been re-elected a member of the council of the Dominion Bowling Association unopposed. The appointment is gazetted of Mr. Thomas Sheriff Ronaldaon as the Deputy of .the Public Trustee. Mrs. A. Davis, Frankley Road, has received advice that her son, Private W. J. Davis, is returning on the 'Mainari, due at Auckland on August 13, Mrs. M. G. Cartwright, of Pukearuhe, lia-s received advice that her son. Private J. L Cartwright, is returning on the Oiessen, due at Wellington on August 2. Advice has been received that Gunner F. J. Stephens, N.ZF.A., son of Mrs. J. 11. Stephens, Durham Road, ia returning by the Giessen, due at Wellington early in August. Sertior-Sergcant Till, of Hawera, who is shortly leaving on transfer to Hamilton, was farewelled by a number of representative citizens on Saturday night and presented with a handsome silver tea service. Mr. T. A. Winks, who has been chair, man of directors of the Ararata Dairy Company for several years, was on Saturday presented by' the suppliers with a gold watch, suitably inscribed, on tho eve of his departure for a trip abroad. Among those returning to the Dominion shortly is liieut.-Coloncl A. W. Larson, son 'of Mr. W. T. Larson, formerly of Patea, and brother of Mra Alf. Davies, of Patea. Lieut.-Colonel l Larsen is an old Patea High School boy, ani is one of the young New Zealanders who have earned rapid promotion during the present war, says the Press. Members of tho Palmerston North police force foregathered at the police station this week and made a presentation to Sergeant and Mrs. Henry, Sergeant Henry having been transferred to Ilawcra. Sergeant Henry has been in charge of the Palmerston station for over four and a half years. A pleasant little function took place at All Saints' Sunday school room, El•tham, on Saturday evening, when several parishioners of the Anglican Church assembled to bid farewell to the Rev. 0. M. Stent, who left on Monday for Wellington. The gathering took the form of a social evening, and at an interval in the proceedings Mr.\Wyatt,'on behalf of the parishioners, presented the Rev. 0. M. Sten.t with a fountain pen as a token of the esteem and respect in which he was held by all during his short stay in the town. The vicar briefly returned thanks.—Argus. The death occurred a few months ago in -England of Mr Alexander Binning Monro, an old resident of Marlborough. The late Mr Monro was the second son of Mr Alexander Binning Monro, of "Auchenbowie," Stirling, Scotland, and a nephew of the late Sir David Monro, one of the early Nelson settlers. Mr Monro was born in 1838, and came to New Zealand in the ship Cresswell. After he left Marlborough he lived in Nelson, but laterl'y in New Plymouth until he went to England. Up to the very lart he maintained a keen interest in New Zealand, and his memory of the old days was most vivid. Nothing gave him more pleasure than to recall old happenings, and the names of his associates The late Mr George Monro was his younger brother, and the two owned Valley field and the Langridge runs, Mr Monro was twice married, his first wife being a Miss Cotterell, of Nelson. His second wife was an English lady, now residing in England. His two daughters and four sons arc all living. Mr Monro kept lip a correspondence with some old New Zealand friends until just before his death, and especially mentioned the great kindness and hospitality he and his brother always received at the hands of the late Mr and Mrs Mowa't, of Alti-' marlock, Awatcre. General Sir Charles Monro was a. Cousin of his, being the sort of the lat»f Ml- Harrv Monro, of Australia. ■
