' The stallholders and assistants at the Catholic bazaar were entertained by the committee at a. social in the Parish Hall on Monday evening. A most enjoyable time was spent Master Winstone McCarthy, who had contributed very largely to the enjoyment of those who visited the bazaar with his Scotch songs, was presented with a silver fountain pen, and his accompanist, .Miss Eileen McCarthy, with a gold bangle. The presentations were made by Mr. D. J. Malone (chairman) on behalf of the committee. The following arc the results of the raffles not previously announced: Cushion cover, W. E. Ranford was reelcHpJ chairman, and at a meeting of directors of the Midhirst Dairy Company Mr. G. Sangster was re-elected chapman. v farmer, in discussing with a couple of travellers by rail jftsterday the question of taxation, produced his chequebook, witicfi contained the butt of a cheque for over £2OO, which he had just forwarded to the Government as his share of ,tlio land and income-tax. The man was well up i%years and was app.irontlv breaking up fast. All his sons had gone to the war. How they fared he did nnt say, but there could be no doubt about the effect of the war upon himself. Short of labor, he had tried to carry a-heavier burden than his years and impaired physique could si awl, and had gone down under it. At the time of the conversation he was suffering acutely, and was on his wav (o see a doctor in one of the larger towns, j'le did not, he said, mind paying thi tax, and added: 'Si know the Government need it,'' but lm nn'W not. understand why it was that other farmers whose position did not differ ereatly, if at all, from his own, absolutely escaped. Asked how it war- done, he said it would be a simple thing for the Government officers to find out, but apnareutlv no effort; was mads to check returns and prevent men who should pav the tax from dodging it. He mentioned the ease of one man (omittin? the name) who had 100 acres of freehold and 240 acre* of educational lease and only paid the small sum of £<lo'in taxation.
