In the House of Representatives Mr. Groome asked members not to press foT a statement regarding the strike, as the Ministry, in view of certain developments, desired to leave the way open for a peaceful settlement, A deputation from the Union Conference waited on Senator Millen asking for a conference between the Government, owners, and seamen. The Cabinet subsequently met and discussed the position. Although no official announcement has been made a hopeful feeling prevails that a settlement is imminent. A meeting of seamen agreed not to resume work until Walsh was released. The Trades Hall Unions' Conference agreed to endeavor to effect a settlement of the strike. i STILL UNDISCHARGED. Wanganui, .Tuly 24. The steamer Inga still lies at the wharf with 400 tons of coal, which the watcrsiders still refuse to unload. The local gasworks are practically without coal, and the manager intimates that Unless supplies are forthcoming before •Monday they will have, to close down. ' A SUGAR FAMINE. Received July -24, 9.25 p.m. Sydney, -Tilly 24. A sugar famine, particularly of refined sugar, is being seriously felt owing to the .shipping strike and other causes. Supplies are almost exhausted.
