CAWTHORN INSTITUTE.
STATEMENT BY CHAIRMAN OF TRUSTEES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Nelson, Last Night. Founder's Day in connection with the Cawthron Institute was observed today. The lecturer was Dr. L. Cockayne, who .took for his subject "The distribution of the New Zealand flora and vegetation." ' The chairman of the trustees, Bishop Sadlier, said that while in England he had visited the universities of Cambridge, London, and Manchester, and interviewed .the Empire's leading scientists, who had promised very valuable help to the institute. It was ajmost impossible to get together a qualified staff in England. A good deal of progress bad been made during the year towards the establishment of the institute, but certain legal difficulties had arisen which prevented the trustees completing their work. When these were disposed of legislation would be introduced in Parliament, and they hoped the institute would be incorporated by Act of Parliament this year. The financial statement showed that the funds available for the institute amounted to £222,532.
