Archibald Hurd, writing in the Daily Telegraph, says 2,324,050 toni of »hip»' ping is now being built in Britain, a gratifying increase of 269,000 tons on the March quarter. Shipowners are showing fine enterprise, but it is regrettable that the coal strikes are crippling their attempts to recover the losses of the war. Ships are Britain's greatest need. America secured the cream of German/i passenger liners, and now possesses /oar million tons more than in 1914. Japan also hasancreated hey merchant fleet by twenty-fivo per cent. Both of these countries are still building at ft maximum rate of. output. British national effort is imperative because we have lost supremacy sine* 1014 America is now building 994 vessels of a tonnage of 3,5 M,143; Britain 781 i ressels of a tonnage of 2,524,050; the I British dominions 200 vessels; of a tonnage of 346,463: Japan 63 vessels of a tonnage ( of 282,000.—Au5.-N.Z.
