An explosion destroyed the Tanwell coal mine at Bluefield, in West Virginia. A fire followed the explosion and many miners were trapped, but most of then were rescued. Lord Newton lias been awarded £SOOO damages against the Daily Mail lor ali leging heartless speeches in the House of Lords regarding war prisoners, when In charge of the prisoners department. The Daily Mail made a series of attacks on Lord Newton for several months in 101 S. The specific libel alleged that Lord Newton, in the House of Lords treated suffering prisoners as an opportunity for self advertisement, with jokes' and Bneers, adding that he joked on the tragic suffering of prisoners. The Primate, Mr. Justice Younger, Lord Robert Cecil, Lord Devonpurt and others testified that Lord Newton was always highly sympathetic.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
