Eeceived July 18, 5.5 p.m. London, Jnly 1". There is no indication of the Government's reply to the miners' conference's decision, which is anxiously awaited. Messrs. Brace and Hartshorn were deputed to convey the decision to the Government, but they decline to discuss probabilities us to the miners' future action. The general impression is that it is the intention of the conference to compel the Government to take the next step, which will probably be the reimposition of the six shillings increase, as the Government demanded a non-strike pledge as a condition for postponing the increase.

Mr. Smillic declares that if the Government wishes the miners to pledge, not to strike, the Government is mor- 1 ally bound to pledge their acceptance of Mr. Sankey's report. The miners' categorical refusal restores the coal situation to its previous seriousness.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.
