TARANAKI EDUCATION BOARD.
SPECIAL MEETING. A special meeting of the Taranakl Education Board was hold yesterday afternoon. There were present: Messrs. It. Masters (chairman), H. Trimble,, S. (I. Smith, 11,1*., H. .T. Eaves, T. Buchanan, H. 11. Grayling and P. J. White. Leave of absence was granted to Mr, C. A. Wilkinson, Ml'. The question of the condition of the Central and Courtenay Street Schools, on which tho senior inspector had reported, was discussed in committee, and on the board resuming it was resolved that plans be prepared and application be made for a grant towards the rebuilding of the two schools. A motion by Mr. Buchanan that plans for a two-storey building should be prepared was defeated. Mr.. Smith suggested that the Department should be asked lo sanction ihe erection of an assembly hall In connection with the Central School, out of some of tho material of the present building. Ho pointed out that such facilities were o. great advantago hi school work, and he was In hopes', also, that the present Stratford Technical School buildings would be made use of, when tho new school was built, in providing an assembly hall for the primary school there. The following appointments on school committees were confirmed: Tututawa, Mr. S. Whelan (vice Mr. W. E. Smith, resigned) ; Bird Road, Messrs. D. Morris and O. Hann (vice Messrs. L. E. Hann, deceased, and S. Old, resigned). It was resolved that the senior inspector bo asked to report on tho matter of additions to the Tahora School. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Hare fot tho presentation of a stove for the infant rooto at the Ratapiko School. The question of repairs to the residence at Te Kiri was referred to tho overseer. A letter was received from the clork of the Manaia Town Board, enclosing the following resolution passed by the board: That this meeting of the Manaia Town Board wishes to bring under the notice of the Taranakl Education Board the urgent need of the Manaia Stato School being replaced by an up-to-date bulldI Ing, as the present building is over 40 years old, and is too small for the pupils attending from the town district, as is shown by the number of pupils at present being taught in the Technical School building. It was resolved that the chairman and Messrs Eaves, Smith and Trimble should visit the. school anil report to the board as to Its condition; It was resolved that tho Minister of Marino be asked to further consider the question of Issuing a license to the board to remove shingle from the beach at the mouth of the Waingongoro River for the erection of the Tawhiti School, and to take Into special consideration that the matter is one of. public expediency. It was decided that the necessary hedge plants fot the Normanby School be supplied, but that the committee should be informed that the board docs not at present supply schools with flowering shrubs. Leave of absence was grantod to Miss C. A. Mackenzie, Kina (one month) ; Mr. N. S. White Tututawa (two weeks) ; Mr. R, 1,. Mcllroy, Central, New Plymouth (for tho purpose of attending the meeting of the executive of tho New Zealand Educational Institute at Wellington). It was decided to send an urgent wire to tho Department, requesting a grant for the Arnwliata Road School. It was also decided to communicate with the Department in respect to grants for Waitara, Oeo, Toltaora and Plhama. Mr. Eaves reported on tho questloh of the extension of the school grounds at Okalawa, and recommended that the present horse paddock be sold, and that a section adjoining tho school be acquired. The board adopted the report, subject to the Department's consent.
