THE COAL SHORTAGE.
ADDRESS BY MR. SEMPLE. THE ONLY REMEDY, By Telegraph.—Press Association, Wellington, Last Night. Mr. R. Scrapie, M.P., gave an address at Brooklyn on the coal shortage, in which he defended the miners against the charges of going slow, and dwelt on the dangers and distastefulness of mining woric. He said the report of the Board of Trade upon the coal industry was nothing but a move to side-step the issue of State ownership. After the address, a resolution was carried declaring that the only solution of the coal problem lay in public ownership and control of the industry, and condemning the Board of Trade's proposal for "semi-private control; with state guaranteed dividends to shareholders." TROUBLE AT WANGANUI. Wanganui, Last Night. The deadlock in connection with the steamer Inga continues, and for the past three days the vessel has been at the wharf waiting for labor to unload her coal cargo. So far efforts to get the local watersiders to work the vessel liavo been unavailing, but negotiations, are still in progress, and an amicable settlement is hoped for. The position is very serious for the local municipal pas works, as only small coal stocks are on hand.
