LICENSING OFFENCES.

WAITARA TUBLICAN FLNED. A. E. Julian, licensee of the Masonic Hotel, Waitara, was charged in Court yesterday, before air. S. E. McCarthy, S.M., on six informations, with failing to notify .the clerk of the court at Te Kuiti that liquor was being sent into a lio-license area. lie was also charged on six informations with not waking proper entries of sales to three residents of a no-license area.

Sub-Inspector Hutton, of New Ply ni'onth,. prosecuted, and defendant was represented-by Mr. Ronald H. Quilliam, and pleaded guilty on all counts. Sub-Inspector Hutton stated that defendant's books had been examined by Constable La Pouple, of Waitara, on May 5, when eight orders for goods were found and taken charge, of by him. Defendant admitted having executed sevenof the orders. The constable initialled the book. He called again to look at the book Rome time later, but was told by tbe publican that the book had been left on the parlor table on the sth inst. and had not been seen since. The SubInspector pointed out the necessity for publicans being careful in such cases in order that the police might be able to detect offenders'.

Defendant, in explanation, said he did not think it would be necessary that he should have to notify the Te Kuiti Court when there were officials at Waitara and New-Plymouth.

Defendant was fined £5 on each of the- first three charges, and was convicted and discharged on the other informations. He was ordered to pay costs amounting to £i 4s. The magistrate warned defendant that he was liable to a fine of £2O for a first offence, £SO for a second, and on a third conviction to have his license cancelled.

Charges of a technical character, for not having given a proper statement .in writing when purchasing liquor to be taken into a no-license area, were hrouglvt against L. J. Rattenbury! Tongaporutu, and Michael O'Halloran, Mokau. There were five informations and all were dismissed.

Mr. Quilliam also appeared for defendants in these cases.
