LORD JELLICOE'S VISIT.
SUBSIDIES FOR ENTERTAINMENTS. By Telegraph—Press Association. ( Christclmreh, Last Night. \ At the meeting of the City Council to-night, the finance committee recommended that a .£ for £ subsidy bo paid on all contributions from local bodies in North Canterbury for entertainments during the visit of Lord Jellicoe, conditionally on the Council's share not exceeding £250. Some of the Labor members of the Council objected to such expenditure, stating that any entertainment that would be given to the Admiral would he beyond the means of the working men. The Mayor said that the majority of the proposed sum would be expended on entertaining the men of the fleet. The committee's report was adopted.
