SOME INTERESTING FIGURES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, July 14. Interesting details are available in reference to the operations of clause 35 of the Expeditionary Force Act,' popularly known as the "family shirker" clause. When it war .announced that the clause was to come into operation the Defence Department was flooded with the names of alleged "family shirkers." Investigation showed that more than 80 per cent of the allegations were without foundation. The number called up under the section was 2978. Of these 1347 were drawn in ordinary ballots before the cases were dealt with, and, of the remaining 1629, those" actually taken into samp totalled 800, and of these 689 embarked,.63 were not traced, and 104 volunteered before clause 35 notices were served.
