THE COAL SHORTAGE.
GOAL COMBINE MUST BE BROKEN.

At the City Council to-night a rather heated discussion took place tegarding the activities of the Council's specif l Coal Committee, but eventually the action of the Mayor and Committee was approved by a majority of the Council. Councillor Agarr, in a criticism of the Council's purchase of coal for the city, said this coal would he sold at 4s 7d pas bag, ex the yard, and the same, or a better class of coal, could be sold to merchants at 4s a bag delivered. Hf declared the City Council's action had resulted in raising the price of coal in the West Coast by 3s.
Councillors defended th?. committee's action, Cr. Armstrong stating that the coal combine must be broken and was going to be broken by the city of Christ church.
