LABOR IN CONFERENCE.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Wellington, July 4. The Labor Party Conference considered many remits to-day. It decided to affirm the principle of the five-day week of forty hours- A motion in favor of compulsory enrolment and voting at elections was withdrawn, after much discussion, in favor of a pronouncement that the present haphazard method of enrolment was extremely unsatisfactory, and a request that the Government should have the work carried out entirely by the State and local bodies. Two remits from the extremist section were discussed. A proposal from Auckland that "workmen's and soldiers' councils be formed throughout New Zealand to deal with the problem of repatriation" was rejected. The moderate section of the conference evidently thought the phrasing injudicious. A remit, from the Auckland coachworkers proposing that in the event of the Latoi «>;rty being feturned to power all war loans should be repudiated, lapsed for want of a seconder. Another remit that did not meet with the approval of the conference came from the Manawatu flaxmillers. It was to the effect that in the platform of t!'o Labor Party the words "the right to live" should be substituted for "the right to work." The conference preferred to retain the old phrasing.
