DISTRICT NEWS.
PUNGAREHU. (From Our Own Correspondent). Our boys who liava borne the brunt of active service are gradually treklng liomewml, tlie latest arrivals being Privates G. A. fvash and J. Baxter, who returned by the troopship Tahiti on July 8. Xtiore is every reason to anticipate a crowded floor at the Pungarehu public ball on the evening of July 7, when a social and danca to welcome home Privates E. J. Barrett, G. A. Nash and J. Baxter In to be held. At the Dominion dairy show held at Hawera tlio Cane Egmnnt Co-op. Dairy Factory was Win a successful exhibitor, securing the second award in the Taranakl Championship for white or colored cheese suitable for export, This speaks well for the manager, Mr. W. T. Guild, and his assistants, all of which is very gratifying to the suppliers. A telegram was received the other day by a local resident from Mr. E. Marran, of the local dairy factory staff, advising his frlemj of his inability to return home at present, being Bnoiv-bound. Air. Murray, accompanied by his M' and family, have been spending a boll" day south of the South Island. Beyond the closing of the local school for th» day and the flying of a few flags, there was no outward sign here of the signing of the peace treaty.
Considerable Interest is being taken here In the proposed wheel tax by the Taranakl County Council, all the ins and outs being freely discussed, the same with all the other coastal districts, the general feeling being antagonistic to the proposals. As one farmer here remarked, they might as well put a barbed-wire reneo around New Plymouth if the proposed by-law should ever come Into force. The late wet weather has been responsible for some of the by-roads In this district hi' coming dangerous for anything like fast driving, not to mention uncomfortable, on account Of the loose stones and water holes, the Cape Boad in particular being vory had at times. As this road now comes under the Jurisdiction of the Egmont County Council, It Is to be hoped that In the near future we shall have something definitely done, as It Is badly In need of repair, particularly the lower end.
There are rumors that extensive Improvements are to be efTocted In all the out-bulldlngs connected *with the local cheese factory. They particularly refer to the rcjent properties purchased by the company. Firewood splitting offers good opportunity for constant work at remunerative pay to any men wanting work. With the cheese factory, not taking Into account the people In general who need constant supplies, and the area from which suitable wood can be obtained is considered very extensive. The many friends of Mr. S. Goodin, who lately left this district to reside in Okato, will lie pleased to learn that he Is getting along well in his new home. "Syd." la at present employed driving the motor lorry connected with the Okato Dairy Company, although | Pungarehu would rather have him back again j as the local blacksmith.
The Infest advices state that Mr. Hlnch, who was confined to his room with a bad attack of gastritis. Is now making rapid progress towards recovery and hopes to be about again soon.
Advice has also been received that Mr. S. Softon and the young man H. Cawsey are both progressing favorably at the New Plymouth hospital.
The latest report regarding the condition of the young woman, Miss L. Jenkins, who cut her wrist somewhat badly by falling on a broken bottle, show that she Is progressing as well as can be expected tinder the circumstances.
On Wednesday last a few of the residents found time to pay Hawera a visit to witness the opening ceremony of the great winter show being held there, and -vote it the best they have had the privilege of attending. '*■ Patrons kindly take notice that the welcome home SDdal and dance which wns to have taken place In the Pungarehti Hall on the Bth has now been altered to Monday evening, the 7th tost., as advertised in this issue. In connection with the wet and cold miserable weather experienced lately, the following extract from a weather forecast supplied a few months ago by Mr. T. L. Wooles, the meteorological expert, makes interesting reading: During May and the early part of June stormv weather should be a prevailing feature, with the usual fine weather Intervals. It Is not unlikely that flood rains and a heavy back country snowfall will be experienced some time during that period. Mid-winter should be maTked by a rather lengthy spell of fine frosty weather, and either In July or August a considerable period or wet,, stormy weather should again set in. The winter should bo a bad one for the back country districts.
Mrg, Blackford, of Eltliam, is at present paying a visit to her daughter, Mrs. H. Camp t bell, of Fungarehu. Miss Campbell, I am sorry to report, is at present confined to her room l having contracted a chill. We all hope to see her about again soon. Her mother, Mrs. Camp, bell, has returned home again, after spending lulte a long holiday (six months) with her youngest daughter at Lyttelton, South liland, looking much better for the rest and the change.
As predicted a few weeks ago, the local boys got going again with the tin cunning on Wednesday evening last, welcoming home Mr; and Mrs. Klrltwood, Lower. Parlhaka road. Everything was taken In good part, all enjoying themselves to their hearts' content. The health, of the young married couple was drank over and over again with the cup that cheers, and if all the good luck that was wished the young couple bear fruit, they should have a very happy and prosperous married life. Other evenings or the sane kind are Impending shortly.
