WEST END SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of the West End School Committee was held last night, when there were present: Messrs W, W. Thomson (chairman), A. K. Smart, J. S. S. Medley, E. Bullot, W. Hawker, J. Sander, J. Garcia, and W. J. Bennett (secretary).

It was resolved to forward a letter of sympathy to Mr. J. Brokenshire in his illness, and express the hope that he would have a steady recovery. The headmaster (Mr. D. P. Evans) reported that the number on the roll at the beginning of the June quarter was 500 (225 girls and 275 hoys). During the quarter 47 had been withdrawn and 51 had entered, making the attendance at the end of June 504 (227 girls and 277 boys). The average weekly roll was 499 and the average attendance 468.5 for the quarter (girls 207.9, boys 265.5). The percentage of attendance as weekly roll number was 935. The attendance had been somewhat affected owing to the boisterous weather and epidemic of colds, but, on the whole, was very good. He expressed pleasure that the school had again annexed the challenge shield for the essay competition at Hawera Winter Show, but in the writing had to lower their colors to Oaonui, to whom they extended their heartiest congratulations. West End gained no points in class 35, "eight lines; of poetry to be written at the dictation of the teacher." No time limit is given for teachers' guidance, therefore some teachers may allow more time than others, and for this reason, he maintained, the class should be open to revision. After detailing various repairs required, the report remarked that the present high cost of school stationery and requisites required serious consideration. After two months' connection with the school, he wished to express his highest appreciation of the excellent work being done by the staff, and the school was very fortunate in having a body of such earnest workers, who willingly sacrificed their time for its welfare.

s The report also thanked Mi". Medley for his generous donation of 30s to be expended in prizes for subjects to be decided upon by the staff. It was resolved to thank Mr. Medley for his handsome donation.

It was resolved to congratulate the staff and pupils on their success in connection with tlie competitions at the New Plymouth and ITawera shows, and to congratulate the committee of the Oaonui School on their success in annexing the writing shieldThe committee extended a cordial welcome to Mr. D. P. Evans, the new master.

In responding, Mr. Evans pointed out that it was a difficult matter to follow one so high in educational matters as Mrs. Bowling, but he would do his test The chairman and Mr. J. S. S. Medley Were appointed a working committee.
