THE RECENT STORM.
THE WANGANUI SPIT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wanganui, July 4. The exceptionally heavy gale raging for the last couple of days resulted in the sea breaking through the south spit and making a gap of about half a chain. A gang of men are employed in filling up the gap with sand bags which have stopped tlie flow of the sea. The water encroaclmient means that the Board is faced with the expenditure of several thousands.
TAIERI PLAIN COVERED WITH WATER. Dunedin, July 4. The rain ceased lost night. Reports from the Taieri Plain are reassuring. No damage is reported, though there is much water on the Plain. The railway line is covered for two feet, and the Mosgiel-Outram . train was unable to run. A slip on the Otago central line, near Waipori, prevented the train from running.
