HUmaxaa jpaSTHSQS. Big Btakes and good class hones, either of the. hunters or hack classes, Beem to be the features of the vasjoua so-called Hunt Club meetings tbia Winter, and when voicing the opinion that the original Hunt Club gatherings &ro t petting away from the old-time sporting? flavor, and measuring strides with the ordinary hard, matter-of-fact race meeting, this scribe expects to eub soma .hunting enthusiasts up the wrong way. . Not that hunting can be carried on: without a certain amount of pecuniary support, but the thing seems to be in danger of being overdone. Very soou we will see the old amateur regime swept away, and the legitimate ranka of the true hunters invaded by a class of " straight-out professionals, who are plainly in the game for lie cash that there is in it. When totalisator permits were granted to Hunt Clubs it waa with, the intention of enabling these very! estimable bodies to secure sufficient for their immediate needs, but nowadays wq I see race meetings run by Hunt Clubs at little expense, on * "borrowed" courses, and with resultant big profits. Already there is a feeling that our hunting friends are verging on the folly of killing the goose that lays the golden eggs. ' , A glance at the acceptors for the Waik'ato Hunt Club's meeting, to 'be held at Hamilton on July 5, shows that horses of the calibre of Rekanui, Hylhis, Corregidor, Mill o- Cowrie, Bedford, Alt
qualified "hunters classes include Toreador, Notability, Peneton, No Surrender, and others. These horses represent '•class" at the leading straight-out race meetings, and while Toreador and Co. may claim the easily acquired "qualification" for hunters' races, the whole team of them seem out of place at what the old brigade always considered to be practically amateur gatherings,
STRAY ITEMS. Kauri King is a notable absentee from the Wellington entries. Multicipal, who has been unlucky of late, broke down at the Napier meeting.
Owing to the 'flu and strikes the new electric totalisator intended for Wanganui cannot be erected in time for tha Spring meeting. Manawapango was expected to give Peneton a good "go" in the Havelock Steeples at Hastings, but he jumped badly, and the Aucklander won with the greatest of ease. Multive takes some time to get on his feet, but he gallops faster and fences better the farther they go. He could have beaten Cello by any distance on Saturday in the Turamoe Hurdles. Maraetotara led most of the way in the Kidnappers' Hurdles, hut looked very tired when the uncertain Reformation ran her to a head in a punishing ifinish. Kangi Thompson had bad luck at the 6tart of the above race. His mount, Torps, collided with another horse, and Thompson's leg was broken badly just above the ankle.
Polthogue showed a lot of pace in the June Steeples at Hastings, but lost ground at almost every fence. One or two spills have made him very careful, and he appears to be getting a trifle tired of facing the big obstacles.
Glucian drew No. 1 in the Raukawa Hack Handicap, and, leading all the way, won easily. He does not score very often, but won the same race two years ago. J'oeraan was giving Merry Jack a big start a mile from the finishing post in the June Steeples, and it looked as ii he would have won if he had been kept closer up. A notable coincidence at the Hawke's Bay meeting was that A. .T. MeFlynn, who only had two rides at the gathering, was on No. S) in the last event each day, and won, his mounts each paying only a trifle less than a score.
A Napier scribe reckons that a film ol the Tlawke's Bay Steeplechase at the late meeting would have contained mors thrills than any sporting picture ever shown at the Movies, and concludes his remarks with the statement that "it would also solve tho vexed question as to how many rounds Polthogue actually traversed."
