PETROGRAD'S SITUATION DESPERATE. FIGHTING AT LAKE LADOGA, BRITISH AM) FINN'S IN TOUCH. Received July 3, 9.35 p.m. Helsingfors, June 28. Judging bjr the recent decrees the situation in Petrograd is desperate. The evacuation of the city is being carried out hastily. Trotsky has ordered that the fortress of Kronstadt bo blown up before being surrendered, also that all bridges, railway stations, and castles be destroyed when the Bolshevist forces are withdrawn. The Finnish General Staff reports that seven Bolshevik warships on the night of the 20th violently bombarded the staff headquarters of the Olonets expedition on Lake Ladoga, destroying the hospitals and houses. The ships also landed troops. Fighting is proceeding. Later reports state that the Finns are six miles from Olonets, while the encircling British are fifteen miles north of the town. Notwithstanding the British commander's ultimatum, Von der Goltz maintains an aggressive attitude in Lettland and has appointed a German governor of Riga, where a number of people have been killed.
