THE HOUSING PROBLEM.
DISCUSSED IN HOUSE OP LORDS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.— Copyr'ght. London, June 27. Lord Birkenhead, in introducing the Housing Bill in the House of Lords, said housing was a problem of staggering gravity. Lord Downham emphasised the emergency character of the measure, which he said was heading straight to national disaster unless the country reverted to private building as soon as possible He added that the London County Council was building 10,000 houses during | the r.oxt two years. The Council's estimate for building the first lot of fourj roomed cottages was £IOSB each, including £2OO for land, roads, and sewers. Provision for half a million houses was required at least, which meant the raising of £500,000,000.—Au5.-N.Z. Cable Aaen
