Regarding the press telegram from Wellington yesterday re the detentibn of the Moeraki at Auckland the Union Company head office states that every effort was made to secure a full New Zealand crew for the vessel. It was only when these efforts had failed that the services of the original Australian insw were re-engaged for the run to Sydney, so that the large number of passengers who have been delayed at Auckland could be taken to their homes in Australia. The Waikato Hospital and Charitable Aid Board passed a Btrong resolution urging the Minister of Public Health to make the notification of venereal disease compulsory. Also a suggestion for legislation refusing the issue of marnape licenses until the contracting parties produced certificates showing that they were free from disease was passed. Or. Douglas, medical superintendent of the Waikato Hospital, strongly supported the members and stated that it was time the gloves were taken off ana secrecy dispelled- The disease was a deadly menace, and the latest figures were disquieting.

WOMEN IN PARLIAMENT. Auckland, Last Night. A request for assurance of his support of a Bill enabling women to sit in Parliament was made to Sir William Frßner to-day by a deputation from the Auckland branch of the National Council of Women. In reply, Sir William Frescr said the promise made by Mr. Massey that a measure on the subject would be brought down next session was an individual promise and did not bind the members of the Government. Gisbome, Last Night. The Poverty Bay Poultry, Pigeon. n*d Caere Bird Association's sixth annual show opened to-day. It was a great sue- <•"?«. POST AND TELEGRAPH DEPARTi MBNT. Palmerston N., Last Night. The Manawatu Post and Telegraph branch to-night unanimously carried a resolution that this branch expresses dissatisfaction with the reclassification, which is full of anomalies and places many officers and the rank and file in a worse financial position than hitherto with the war bonus, and urges the Government to remedy matters' in order to meet the increased cost of living. It also urges the executive of the council to request the department 'o reclassify the whole service at the earliest possible moment, and suggests an additional repreaentative of the association on the Promotion Board and the redution of one representative from the head office as a means of overcoming the difficulty. Further, it strongly urges that tlie time has arrived when the war bonus promised by the Government should be paid, and not to keep officers begging for what has been promised.

LIQUOR ON TROOP TRAIN. DAIRYMAN HEAVILY FINED. Wellington, Last Night. Patrick Cavanagh, a dairyman at Kaiwarra, was fined £43 to-dav for selling milk other than that produced from a registered dairy. The magistrate described the state of affairs as most revolting, and added that there was direct evidence that a number of cases of enteric had been infected from the dairv Such a place, lie said, must be ati absolute plague spot.

TIMBER WORKERS' CONFERENCE. Wellington, Last Nig'h't. The Timber Workers' Conference passed a resolution urging the Government to appoint a comnetent person to inspect tram lines, bridges, skids, and stacking of timher at sawmills, in order to protect the lives of timber-workers. Jt was resolved that, in order to cope with the ever-increasing cost of living, the Government lie urged to nationalise as many of the Dominion's industries as possible. To give effect to" the resolution the. conference suggested that immediate steps be taken to nationalise th" liookinu, plaining, and coal industries. It was fiiriher resolved that the Government take over accident insurances as a State monopoly, and that all employers be compelled to insure their workers in the State office.
