STRANDED NEW ZEALANDERS.

MINISTER'S STATEMENTS. Qy Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Hon. Kussell says the Government has received no official information in support of the statements alleging that there are cases of extreme distress m Sydney among stranded New Zealanders, and he is inclined to think they are part of a propaganda being carried on in Sydney to force the position at this end. The Government agent in Sydney had full power to deal with any genuine cases of distress, and he had been cabled to-day asking whether there waß need for more funds.

On ,the advice of the Solicitor-General, the Government had determined to withdraw its previous decision as to the priority of the return to the of various classes who are stranded. Full responsibility on ,that matter now rests, with the steamship owners.

A communication had been received from Australia asking whether the Government was prepared to allow the stranded New Zealanders to come across in overseas steamers en route to the Dominion, the Government giving a promise not to quarantine the vessels on arrival. The Minister said it was impossible for the Public Health Department 'to give any such promise.

Sir James Allen stated that he did no.t believe the Shipping Controller would allow the New Zealand Government to make use of refrigerated steamer for this work if doing so would involve the risk of the ship being quarantined and the consequent delay in the shipment of frozen cargo from the Dominion.

FURTHER PROTESTS. Received June 20, 12.5 a.m. Sydney, June 25. A, further meeting of stranded New Zealanders reiterated protests against the New Zealand Government's treatment in ignoring urgent appeals for help. The meeting accepted offers by Wirth's Circus and Paramount Pictures to hold benefit performances. A number of the stranded men offered to man a ship if available. A crew was elected and a cable dispatched asking whether the New Zealand Seamen's Union objects to such procedure.
