She had a fine trip out lint" nearing the New Zealand coast, when strrtng westerly winds set in. The only untoward event of the voyage was the death at sea of t|)e third engineer (Mr. J. B. The Whakatane still carrleß her minesweeping gear, which had been used In the English Channel. Before leaving New York she received a coat of paint over her 'dazzle" painting, the lifeboats and deck equipment being painted over on the way to New Zealand. Mr. H. During the war the EUerman lines lost 90 Mssels. The deferred shareholders of the lines received for 1917 a dividend of 150 per cent. The appropriation to reserve fund Is reduced from £750,000 to £500,000. The directors state that the cost of new tonnage is so high that the lossses the company have sustained cannot be made good with the compensation and insurance money received The abnormal cost of building, they deolare, makes it Impossible to eipect a fair return dn the present cost of new ships. In order to maintain the company's services, and to assist in the restoration of the British mercantile marine to Its former position, contracts have nevertheless been entered into for the replacement of a large proportion of the steamers lost.
