Mrs. E. 6, Allen, Frankleigh Park, has received word that her eon, Lieut. Eric Allen, is returning by the Kigoma. Captain Haarold Thompson, of IngleWood, has sailed by the Kuapehu, and is expected to arrive in New Zealand on July 21.

The name of Sister E. M. Fitzgerald, Elthanj, appears among the list of thqse returning to New Zealand by the Ruahme, due at Wellington on July fl, Second-Lieut. H. J. Laurent, V.C., Ha. wera, is returning to New Zealand by the Ruahine, due. about July fl.

Hw deatli is reported from Brunswick Wanganui, of Mrs. G. W. Campbell She leaves a widower, two sons, and four daughters, all grown up. Mrs. E. T Spray, of Mldhirat, has been advised that her son, Signaller Alf. Kivell, is due by the Tahiti on July 2 at Auokland.

Mr. Arthur Morton, acting-chairman of directors of the Egmont Box Company, accompanied by Mr. J. S. Connett, one of the directors, left,by the mail train yeßterday for Taibape on business connected with the company.

At the capping ceremony of the New Zealand University last week Miss J. Dunn, of the S.tratford District High School, received her diploma of Master of Arts. Miss Sunn took history as her special subject, and gained "first class" honors. She was awarded a Jacob Joseph scholarship, whitth, fortupately (says the Stratford Post), she can hold without leaving the Stratford school.

A very old resident of Auckland, Mr. Henry Edwin Rogers, died at his home, Manukau Road, Epsom, last week, at the age of 70.. Mr. Rogers arrived in Auckland with his parents in 1857. In his earlier dayH he was connected with the Union Sash and Door Company and the Kauri Timber Company, and, later, engaged in the building trade in the Grey Lynn and One Tree Hill districts. He retired some year's" ago- Mr. Rogers was a member of the Fountain of Friendship Lodge of Oddfellows. He is survived by his widow and a gfown-up family. Cable advice has been received by Dr. A. W. Averill, Anglican Bishop of Auckland, that the Rev. Peroral Ernest James, M-A., of England, has accepted the charge of St- Mary's Cathedral, Parnell. Mr. James, who is a comparatively young clergyman, had . a brilliant scholastic career,, being a scholar and exhibitioner of Queen's College, Oxford. Before the war he wt|s engaged in scholastic work in Durham, England, but during ,the war served as a chaplain to the forces in Mesopotamia. It 1b not yet known when Mr, James will arrive in Auckland. He "is not married, and will probably be accompanied by his sister when he comes to Auckland. Archdeacon G. .Mac Murray, the former vicar of St. Mary's, resigned in April last, and since then the parish has been under the cere of ,the Rev. Dr. T. O'Callsughan, assisted by the Rev., J. R. Burgin.

A cable message from Melbourne states that Sir Thomas A'Beckett, formerly senior-Puisne Judge in Victoria, is dead. Sir Thomas A'Beckett was 83 years of age, having been born in London in August, 1836. He was trained for tlic law, and, after admission to the English Bar at Lincoln's Inn at the age of 23, he in the following year commenced the practice of his profession in Victoria, and Bpeedily made his way .to the front. At the age of 50 he, in 1886, accepted appointment to the Bench, where he had a notable career. In 1909, in recognition of his services, he received the honor of knighthood, being created a Kiitgiit Bachelor. He was chosen as a .member of the Council of the Melbourne University in 1887, and took considerable interest in the welfare and advancement of that' institution during the many years with which he had been connected With it. He' totik a great interest in sport, and until comparatively recent years was an ardent cyclist, and also was keenly interested in cricket. Sir Thomas A'Beckett retired ,two years ago on a pension. Among the officers who returned to Auckland by the Waimana on Monday fere Lieut-Colonel S. Allen, D.S.O. and Bar, and his brother, Lieut.-ColonoT R, C. Allen. D.S.O. The former commanded the Second Auckland Bi.ttaliijn and 'the latter the Tint Auckland Battalion. Both officers have had distinguished military careers. Colonel S. S Alien, affectionately known as j".S xye," was formerly practising as a solicitor at ;Morrinsville. HeMtNew Zealand as a major, reaching his present rank cany in 1017. He has been wounded three times. On account of his wounds he returned to New Zealand, but left again for active service in a ; very short time. He received his decoration for gallantry »t Messines.
