Russell and requested financial assistance from the (government. The Hon. U. A PREMATURE CELEBRATION. Auckland, June 23. The bonfire erected on Mount Eden, Auckland, by the peace celebrations committee, which cost £IOO was prematurely fired by mischief-makers at 8 o'clock on Sunday evening and was totally desi jyed. It presented a fine spectacle and despite the steady rain was watched by a large crowd of spectators- The fire led many to believe that peace had been signed.

WAIMANA'S WAR TROPHIES, Auckland, June 23. The troopship Waimana brought thousands of war trophies for the Dominion museums, including 22 field guns, seven howitzers, hundreds of machine guns, and samples of every fighting device used by the- Germans.

MINE-SWEEPING OPERATIONS. Wellington, June 23. The mine-sweepers before coming here had cleared up the China Sea, where they destroyed over forty mines. After finishing in New Zealand, which, with good weather, is expected to take two months, they will sweep the Australian minefields. At the end of their work ■they will be handed over to tiie Australian Government.

Michael McCann, who escaped from custody by jumping off a Main Trunk train on June 12 at the top of Ramimu spiral, and who was captured on Saturday night at Fordell, appeared in the Magistrate's Court this morning on a "harcre of escaping from custody.
