A meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Milking Shorthorn Association was held on Thursday. The gum of £25 was voted to the Breeders' Club. Reports from Canterbury showed increasing interest in the strain, and, as a stimulus, special prizes were awarded for competition in that district. The sum of 20 guineas was allotted for semi-official test prizes. It was also resolved to recommend the Agricultural Department to grant second class certificates to oows which have passed the test but did not fulfil other regulations. It was decided to apply for a registered brand for branding cattle passed for entry in the herd book. Mr S. Turner (J. j. Lonsdale oq.) said at the National Dairy Association mooting at Palmerston North on fuesday that it was not correct to eay that the Imperial authorities handled all : the produce, as the surplus product not Wsquired had been handed over to the flriw that handled it before the war in portion tc the amounts they handled, If oue examined the balance sheets *>f three or four of the leading firms who did not depend wholly on NTew Zealand and Australian produce, but had (lie northern hemisphere for the other half of th 3 year, it would bo found that a firm with a capital of £500,000 handled £4,000,000 per year, and made a profit, of £IB,OOO to £20,000, It would "copt 4} per cent to distribute New Zealand produce nlone . In Taranaki iae factories had representatives of 22 buying concerns, who were willing to give, n, certain price, and if this was turned down they were prepared to take, the produce on open consignment. There were 22 firms represented and capital of over £10,000,000, nnd only mad® 'a prpflt of £300,000. .It would,.-lie conbe better for the farmers to trv and obtain the £700,000 profit made bv the Bank of New Zealand by the establishment of a Farmers' Bank.
