MIDHIRST.
(From Our Own Correspondent) One Teault of the return home of our soldier boys is that the ranks of our single ladies are rapidly being depleted. On Monday, the 9th inst- Mr and Mrs Hatcher gave a "kitchen evening" in honor of Miss Anderson, whose marriage is to take place in the near future. Musical and vocal items were contributed by Mrs Hatcher, Miss Keightley and Messrs. Meads and Mischewski. Dancing and cards also contributed to the enjoyment of the evening. After supper Mrs Hatcher, in a short but happy speech, referred to the popularity that Miss Anderson had always enjoyed in Midhirst, and wished her every happiness in her future life. Mr. E. Anderson responded on behalf of his and a very pleasant evening was concluded by singing "For She's a Jolly Good Fellow." Miss Anderson was the recipient of many valuable and useful presents. Although our football team suffered a defeat by Bltham last Thursday, onlookers were impressed with the improved form they displayed, and thera is no doubt that with a little more practice together they will render a good account of themselves in their future matches. Their next contest is against Star on the Stratford show ground, and lovers of the game should not lose the opportunity of seeing what -will surely be a really interesting game. A meeting of considerable local importance ivas held on Saturday 14th inst. Mr P. Harkness was voted to the and explained the meeting was convened to consider an offer from the directors of the Midhirst Dairy Co. of the .use of the factory paddock for general sports purposes. After some discussion those present came to the unanimous decision that tlie offer should be accepted, and delegates were appointed with a view to making final arrangements. It was also decided that in the event of. the delegates making a satisfactory agreement with the directors of the company, immediate steps be taken to plough, ievel and sow down the ground, many good offers of help in this direction being forthcoming from sportsmen in the locality. There is every reason to hope that the transaction will go through successfully, and that by next season we shall not only life a good cricket and football ground, but possibly tennis courts and a bowling green also.
The cricketers held another very successful dance in the hall on the 11th iinst. Miss Huse provided dance music, Mr F. Carter was M.C. and Messrs Snookes, C. Fowler and McMeckan were conspicuous for the manner in which they carried out the arrangements for the evening. The committer intend holding another dance on Wednesday week, which will no doubt attract a good attendance, owing to the success of the two past functions.
