WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, June 17. The s.s. Armagh, which was to have arrived on Saturday last, has been delayed to June 25. Waitara was visited by the Coal Commissioners on Friday last, in connection with the inquiry into the coal shortage. As a result of their investigations the coal famine is likely to be relieved, a limited quantity coming to hand regularly through Messrs. Gaustad, Marlow and Co. It was anticipated that Borthwick and Sons would be able to get a quantity of coal from the s.s. Armagh when in the roadstead, as she has some 300 tons available, but the firm has received a wire from the Commissioners stating that owing to restrictions imposed by the Overseas Shipowners' Committee, no coal could be landed.
We are sorry to hear that Mr. Geo. Bird, who has been in bad health ever since the influenza; epidemic, has been taken to the New Plymouth Hospital. We hope he will soon recover, and return again in good health.
The Seaside euchre party, which is to be held on Wednesday, should prove to be attractive.
Mr. H. Spurdle, who has held the office of secretary of the Clifton Football Clulj for many years, resigned the position at a meeting of the committee or. Saturday night. Mr. Spurdle was thanked for his long and faithful service, and made a life member of the club. Mr. R. Chew, who was in business as a motor engineer before joining the Motor Patrol Service, has returned to Waitara. He is looking nona the worse for liia experience.
