A SMALL SCHOOL'S SCORES AT THIS WINTER SHOW.

To the Editor. Sir,—lt must truly be gra'ifylng alike to the teacher (Mr R. E. Thimas), the pupils and the menu* of the r-uplls at Norfolk Road School to read the results of the primary schools' competitions at the winter show, when they won 16 prizes, II first, 4 second and 1 third. This, on the face of It, is a particularly praiseworthy performance for so 3mall a school, but when the prize list is studied it is found to b'j indicative of more value In the tuition than nt first is noticeable, for over and above securing awards for the products of the soil ihat lis! shows that their achievements hare not been confined to the results of physical labor only. The judge In this class is reported to hare expressed a high opiuion of tie quality of the writing exhibits at the show, specially that a: Standard IV. The prize list reads, Norfolk Ist and 2nd. Then In the competitions *a which their actual uoderstandmg of the teaching given them la directly tested, i.e., "The Garden Notebook," "Notes on Top-dressing Experiment," ' Graph on Manurial Trial Results," and "Graph on Herd Yield," they proved how thoroughly they had grasped the subjects taught with a score of three first and one third prizes. Under these circumstances it surely Is excusable if they do feel a bit extra self-satisfied, and it is to be hoped that this year's success, not the first by any means, will be a spur to fresh endeavor as well as an incentive to * spirit of emulation In other country schools of Taranaki.—l am, etc., TAHI HEKENI.
