POLICE'SERGEANT ATTACKED. Bjf Telegraph.—Press Association. Wanganui, June 14. Police-Sergeant J. Reid, as the result ' of" injuries received in a scuffle late on Thursday night with three men, is now in the public hospital suffering from slight concession. Sergeant Reid visited a suburban place of entertainment, and had occasion to remonstrate with three men outside the hall. It is stated he was set upon by the trio and badly knocked about. He managed to return home, where he became unconscious and was taken to the hospital. He is now progressing favorably.

1 RETURN OF ABSENT MINISTERS. Palmerston N., July 14. In an interview with a press representative at Palmerston North to-day the Hon. A. M. Myers said he expected Mr Massey and Sir Joseph Ward would return to New Zealand in the middle of July. It is important they should be here and they could not return too soon to face the period of unrest with which New Zealand was confronted politically and socif'ly. Very grave matters of finance had to be dealt with and the sooner these were gone into the bettor. ( It would be seen what these were from the statement he made in Auckland. The extreme Labor Party was urging on Bolshevism and an appeal to the country was urgently necessary.

CAPTURE OF AN ESCAPEE.. Hamilton, June 14. James Irwin, who escaped from the Waikaria Prison Camp,, was captured by the police at Kawhia. BURGLARIES IN WANGANUI. Wanganui, June 14. Three business premises—the Gasworks' office, Matthew Russell's, and the New Zealand Express Company's office —were broken into last night. In one case the burglars entered through an open window- At the Gasworks' office the drawers were ransacked, but nothing was taken. The position was similar at the Express Company's office, but £7 10s and a few stamps were taken front Russell's. The police believe the robbery was the*work of youths.

UTILISING LAKE WADIAREMOANA. The Wairoa County Council yesterday practically decided to embark on a local hydro-electric scheme from Lake Waikaremoana, irrespective of others coming in. A committee was set up to confer with the Borough Council on Monday night. In the meantime Mr. Hay has been communicated with to provide plans, whereupon the : committee proceeds to Wellington to obtain a Government permit. The project offers no difficulty for Wairoa, the road being already made. THE STRANDED NEW ZEALANDERS. , Auckland, Last Night. The Hon- G. W. Russell states that the Government intends to allow the Moeraki to bring 250 returned New Zealanders to Wellington. No preference will be given to returned soldiers and munition workers over the necessitous cases of women, children, and other civilians. It is hoped the number will be increased. Other .people who desire to come to New -Zealand for business reasons would have to remain in Australia until the whole of the stranded : New Zealanders have been returned.

THE KOWHAI STILL FAST. Wellington, Last Night. The tug Terawhiti made an unsuccessful attempt to tow the collier Kowhai off to-day, and makes a fresh effort tomorrow, with the spring tide. The collier is practically high and dry at low water, but her'position is not considered dangerous, and there are good prospects of refloating, as the hull ia considered to be undamaged. . -
